Diwigdi Valiente is an Indigenous and coral conservation professional, sustainability advocate, and expert in sustainable tourism and climate policy. A proud member of the Guna Indigenous peoples from Panama’s Caribbean coast, he combines deep-rooted Indigenous wisdom with international academic expertise to address critical issues at the intersection of conservation, tourism, and climate change. He was previously National Director for Tourism Planning and Development and is currently Senior Program Manager at the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS). Diwigdi is also the founder of Burwigan, an Indigenous-led organisation promoting climate awareness and design thinking to guide orderly displacement and adaptation strategies. With over a decade of experience as a project and programme manager in Panama’s public sector, he holds a Swiss Higher Diploma in Hotel and Restaurant Management and a Bachelor’s in International Business and Tourism Management from César Ritz Colleges, Switzerland. He further specialised in Economics and Finance at INCAE, Costa Rica, and International Trade and Tax Law at Leiden University, the Netherlands. Diwigdi has consulted for NGOs, hotel chains, and international organisations on sustainable tourism, Indigenous rights, and the blue economy. He is a sought-after speaker at global forums and has been recognised among Panama’s Top 10 Young Leaders of the Future and Vanity Fair’s 2024 list of 17 Activists to Watch.
