2024

Joshua Pandong, a biologist with WCS since 2005, has devoted his professional life to the study of orangutans in Malaysia. At WCS Malaysia, he leads a dedicated team of researchers whose work focuses on understanding orangutan populations and distribution in Sarawak, crucial for informing conservation strategies. Through close collaboration with local communities, Joshua empowers them to become stewards of vital orangutan habitats, fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility. This grassroots approach not only strengthens conservation efforts but also promotes sustainable practices within communities. Furthermore, Joshua's expertise has led to the development of an award-winning English-Conservation Education program, widely utilized in schools and outreach initiatives. This program serves as a valuable tool in raising awareness about orangutan conservation and fostering environmental stewardship among future generations.

We respectfully acknowledge that this summit takes place on the ancestral lands of the Indigenous peoples of Sarawak, including the Iban, Bidayuh, Orang Ulu, and Malay communities. We honour their enduring connection to this land, their cultures, and their traditions, and recognise their continued contributions to the richness of Sarawak's heritage.
